I waited three weeks for this review to give legitimate feedback on how my family likes it. Granted, that does not cover how LONG it lasts, but I didn't want to wait 6-months to a year to write the review.

Following the recommended initial cleaning procedure had us creating good smelling / tasting ice in just a few hours. We have run it non-stop for three weeks since then. We are a large family who loves ice in our water and sodas, so we keep it working full time. We also have a side-by-side refrigerator with ice in the door. It never made ice fast enough for us. Now we use them both, and the new SPT ice-maker helps us keep the fridge ice maker topped off.

The noise of the machine while making ice is not a problem for me. It's louder than our fridge, but I only hear it when I'm in the kitchen. It's not so loud that you can't talk over it, and it doesn't detract from watching TV in another room. So noise is a non-issue. One funny side note: The first few times it "dropped ice" into the baseket, I thought someone was in my kitchen and went to look. It makes quite a racket! But it's only a few seconds.

This thing is BIG! It takes up as much room on a counter as a microwave, but it's taller. You have to have enough clearance above it to get the ice door open. Be sure to measure where you will place it before buying it.

I love the way the black and stainless unit looks in our kitchen. I am SO glad we did not opt to buy a cheaper white unit. That would have looked out of place.

We do have a CON, but it's not a defect, and it doesn't stop us from loving the machine: Because it's basically an ice chest, not a freezer, it does not keep the ice frozen. That is pretty well documented throughout other reviews. However, on a hot or humid day, even if you use ice that has just dropped, it's a bit soft, or wet, and it melts quickly in a drink. When drinking water, I like that. When drinking soda, I do not. We have just learned to work around that by using ice from the fridge ice-maker for soda. Another minor issue related to this: If you use ice from the SPT to top off the ice-maker bin in your refrigerator, the wetness of the ice will cause it to immediately clump together, then freeze into a large lump. To get around that, just stir them up with a butter knife or some other blunt object as soon as you pour the ice into the bin.

We do like and RECOMMEND this machine - a lot. Just be aware of it's size and the fact that you don't get rock hard ice from it.

I bought this to use in my garden party patio and NOT indoors. The insulation helps this perform in heat where others that are not insulated fail. The large ice cubes are really large compared to another brand I purchased before. I highly recommend. I gave it 4 stars because it has 3 design improvements or flaws. Having owned a restaurant in the US and understanding the food hazard and safety precautions for ice...it needs some improvements. One, having to remove the ice basket with your hands to refill...if instead it had a little tube and spout to pour into...that would eliminate the hand carried bacteria hazard. Next, a slot or notch that the ice scoop could fasten to to keep the handle from falling over into the ice thus contaminating it. Last, the lid should lift backward just 2 degrees more to prevent it from wanting to "fall down" while you are in the middle of scooping ice. Otherwise...a 5 star product.
