This is our first rice cooker. We have made brown and white rices on the stove top without trouble for years. The cooker was purchased to free up a pot and a burner, and for the timer feature. Other reviewers have touched on almost every pro and con I've observed.
The manual is clear and helpful. The machine is easily programmed and works as intended, although the cooktime for brown rice greatly exceeds the stovetop cooktime needed for the same rice. I recently tried to set the timer to make brown rice for 5:30, loading it at 4 pm and apparently that was not enough time- it switched to regular cooking and the rice was done at 6 instead. The first few batches of rice may be too wet or too dry, as you learn how much water your particular rice requires.
The keep warm function is great. The machine cleans easily. The two timers are very handy. But the nonstick coating is a real problem.
Cooking the first 3 or 4 pots of rice filled the house with a smell of hot/burning plastic. I did remove every sticker and label from the interior and exterior. This smell has faded with continued use, but is worrisome.
As many reviewers have noted, the non-stick coating is delicate. I have other Zojirushi products that are coated with a titanium-ceramic. The rice cooker's inner bowl is coated with a different nonstick substance, and the coating is much less durable. Fluffing the rice with the provided nylon paddle will leave light scratches on the bowl, even after the first use. My first cooker arrived with a deep gash in the nonstick coating, possibly caused during shipping (the measuring cup and rice paddle holder ship unwrapped in the bowl). The retractable power cord on that machine also would not retract. Amazon quickly replaced the damaged item. The second machine's cord works perfectly, but I am handling the bowl with great caution, and have started using a softer silicon spatula rather than the provided paddle to fluff or serve rice.
Although the cooker works well and meets the needs of our household, the plastic smell and the easily damaged nonstick coating of the bowl are real problems. At this price, the cooker should have had a better-quality interior bowl. Unlike other reviewers who have complained about the nonstick, I am not anti-nonstick coating in general. I have other nonstick pans of various sorts and use them without worry. I am disappointed at the low quality of this particular nonstick bowl, and concerned that the provided nylon paddle is hard enough that it scratches the coating.

I have not had a single rice fail since buying this cooker. Whether I make a saffron rice or jasmine rice, it comes out perfect every time. I only wish that I could program the unit to play Lady Gaga instead of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

Have had product now for a year and three months, having ordered it after reviewing a number of rice cooker reviews.
Cooks rice well and reliably. Easy cleanup. No mechanical problems thus far. Timed start works well.
It has folded itself into the mainstream of our cooking and seems to stay on the counter more than beneath it. We have no regrets so far with this machine.
Main beef is the instruction manual. It kinda stinks. Organization is confusing and, doctorate education notwithstanding, I found myself scratching my head a few times, wondering what was meant. Poor language translation is probably part of the problem.
Music tones are a little dorky, but we sing along anyway!
